I painted this earlier this year with the intention of submitting it to a gallery but the virus has put that on hold for the time being. I really like how the colours turned out on this one, I only used watercolour instead of using my usual mix of watercolour and gouache.
I started drawing this last year, after becoming inspired by the wisteria growing in my aunt’s garden. I just imagined fairies flying though around it.
I originally envisioned the woman to be a fairy queen, but she didn’t really turn out to fae like in the end so I’ll leave it up to the viewer to decide.
I’ve been digitally colouring some of my inktober drawings from last year using Procreate. I actually finished this cinderella one last year but have made a few small changes, mainly to the background and carriage. The colour palette for this was inspired by the Walt Disney animated film.
I’m really enjoying using Procreate to paint I would love to do it more and properly explore different techniques and styles.
Here are the pencil illustrations that accompanied the full colour ones in the final book design. Once I had finished all the illustrations, I created a book on Blurb so that me and the author Caroline Jackson could have printed copies.
I’ve worked on blurb before so was quite used to the format and fairly soon I had created a nice book to wrap up the project. Hopefully one day it will be a book available to all!
This project was a commission from the author and there are no publication planes at this time, however who knows what will happen in the future!
I shall keep you updated but for now I hope you enjoy these illustrations and the characters. This project was a lot of fun for me to work on and I hope to revisit Umbo again one day.
This is the final full colour illustration I did for the Umbo project. It illustrates the final few sentences of the story where Umbo falls asleep in his armchair, dreaming of more adventures.
I drew a few pencil illustrations to accompany the text and will post them soon. I hope everyone had a great New Year!
